The Property Line · free · daily

Five minutes a day to remember where you end.

A line you only walk when you're upset is a line you have to think about. A line you walk every morning is just the line.

A daily practice, at the same time each day if you can. The screen walks the property with you, one stretch of it at a time.

For the ones who are sick of being the solution: the fixer, the absorber, the person who answers every demand on the spot.

Four moves · Five minutes

Sit or stand. Feet on the floor. Hands free.

The screen goes quiet and shows one move at a time. Esc or × stops it.

The practice

Four moves. Five minutes.

Move 01 · 0:20–3:16

Walk the property

Trace your own edges with your own hand. Collarbone to shoulder, shoulder down the arm to the fingertips. Back up the arm, across the chest, down the other side. Neck, jawline. Hips, thighs, knees, down to the feet that pressed the floor earlier today.

Move 02 · as you go

Speak for the land

Wherever the hand goes, one sentence, quiet: This is mine. No elaboration. This is mine is a complete sentence and a property record.

Move 03 · 3:16–4:06

Mark the line

Trace the border itself, once, slowly: the outside edge of you, where everything else starts. Then the one sentence the whole practice builds to: I decide what crosses.

Move 04 · 4:06–4:46

Set the anchor

Pick one spot: sternum, hip bone, the back of one hand. Press it once. That's the pause button.

For the rest of the week, when the old urge rises (to fix, to absorb, to answer the demand on the spot), press the anchor before you answer. One press buys you the same half-second the Interrupt buys. You've already learned what a half-second is worth.

Touch not right today? Trace an inch above the skin. The line is still the line.

Why it works

The old training taught you that your edges are negotiable and your capacity is public property. Thinking that belief away doesn't work. It was never installed by thinking. A line walked with the hand, daily, is a fact the body can hold, and the body believes facts faster than affirmations.

Honest limits

For some people, especially where touch was complicated, running your own hands over your own property can bring up grief. Skip any zone that isn't yours today, do the rest of the property, and let the practice keep. And nobody's grading this. A week of missed days doesn't erase the line. The line is still where you left it.

To keep

The desk card.

The four moves and the one sentence on a 5 × 7 card for the mirror or the nightstand, where you'll see it at the same time every day.

Where this comes from

The mechanism, and its limits.

Facts over affirmations

When people with low self-esteem repeated “I'm a lovable person,” they felt worse afterward (Wood, Perunovic & Lee, Psychological Science, 2009). A statement the mind doesn't believe starts an argument. The Property Line asks for no belief. The hand finds an edge that's already there.

The anchor

Deciding in advance what you'll do when a moment arrives (when the urge rises, I press the spot) makes the follow-through far more likely. Across 94 studies, plans made in that if-then shape had a medium-to-large effect (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006). The press is the if-then plan, made physical.

Its scope

If the practice brings up more than it settles, or touch brings back something you'd rather not face alone, that's worth taking to a professional. If you're not safe right now, call or text 988.
